Symbolism

What is symbolism?

Using symbolism, an author can create an understanding of a concept as much bigger than it is, giving it weight. It gives depth, color, and power to a work. A great example is within poetry, which often uses symbolism to convey deeper meanings and set a tone. It's meant to convey moods that perhaps simply cannot be invoked with words. Although there are symbols that have become popular over the ages, it's also common to subvert them. When asking questions about symbols, think about the tone and themes of the piece.
